Photography and Art in apartment

Lulu the Border Collie

Lulu the Border Collie in Hemphill Park, fall of 2020 (she was 4 yrs old)
Printed on metal, 24 x 36”

The Gothic Ray Gun Rocketship was originally an art object at the Burning Man Festival in Nevada. I took this photo as I was walking past it on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. My first thought was "oh they have landed" :-) Actually, it was a two year loan to the city I believe. Last I heard it was in Calgary. Anyway, it was a perfect day for such a photo with Treasure Island and the Bay Bridge in the background.

The view from a bridge on the RIver Walk in San Antonio. There is a fairly famous restaurant under the colorful umbrellas there, who's name escapes me at the moment.

A timelapse image composite of the view of the Chisos Mountains (Big Bend National Park) as seen from Mimi Webb Miller's guest house in Terlingua. Mimi owns and runs a great place across the "street" from her called La Posada Milagro. This image spanned about an hour from sunset to darkness as the ghosttown came to life. It hung for some months at the Bob Bullock Story of Texas Museum just across from the UT campus (worth the visit).

The view from The Window in Big Bend National Park where the water flows sporadically from the "basin" of the Chisos Mountains to a pouroff. I first visited here when I was 10 years old.

Above the vanity and window is an aerial view of Gran Roque, Los Roques, Venezeula where I was being flown in a powered hang glider through trade winds of 25-30 mph. This was from film in 1997.

Hemphill Park, between 30th and 33rd a few blocks from the apartment. This was made from 25 images taken 395 feet above the ground.

The photo above the bed, this was taken looking almost due west after much rain over the hills and plains beyond Mount Livermore in the Davis Moutains of West Texas. I am at about 6500 ft. elevation when I took this with the owner of the Livermore Ranch. One of the prettiest pieces of land I have ever seen in Texas with year round running water.

Above the stairs, the top photo of the path to the house, is where a friend's daughter was married several years ago. This was my wedding present to them. Her grandfather's out-of-town retreat is the house on the hill, about 50 miles north of Austin. I light painted the road, building and some grass... had a pizza in the house on the hill, and an hour later declared the photo was done. Everyone with me inside kind of thought I was nuts I think. Now it is proudly displayed in the parents of the bride's home.

The black and white photo of the steps/path is La Posada Milagro in Terlingua. Mimi Webb Miller's house is behind the wall on the left. I have spent many weeks in this area over the years photographing at night. One day I'll talk Mimi into trading a stay at her place for a print of this photo.

This was a single photo of a criterion bike race on the grounds of the Austin State Hospital (Guadalupe and 45th). I waited by a colorful background for someone to ride by... then amazingly I figured out from the photo the club name on the jersey, found the young lady, and sold her a photo at my cost as I thought she should have it. This photo hangs on permanent display at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.

Above the stairs: The rowers are on Lady Bird Lake, early one winter morning. Head of the Colorado race. The photo is also on permanent display at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.

Ephel Dúath: Fence of Shadows (Emory Peak, Big Bend National Park). I named this from the movie LORD OF THE RINGS. Probably the best photo I have ever taken from the back seat of a car at 45 mph.

Above the stairs: The sunset is of The Window in Big Bend National Park.

In the kitchen, the windmill is called "Windshift in the cosmos" because of what happened taking it. It's at a friend's ranch 57 miles north of Austin that I have visited for 50 years. This old windmill I light painted, then waited for the stars to show in my composite image... but right after I took the photo, the wind shifted, and what appears to be a shadow, is actually the windmill vane, but not "light painted." It's just there because the wind changed direction. It gave the photo a 3D look as I first thought it was weird when I looked at it until I realized what happened. The lighter part of the sky is from the Milky Way rotating as well.

In the kitchen, a pair of rowers on Lady Bird Lake for the Head of the Colorado Race.

Lastly the papercut image above the refrigerator is from a British neighbor who used to live around the corner on Cedar Street. They have returned to England, but this is my memory of them.
